LGBT Pride for all of the UK

Today's addition to our 'Tell Us Your Story' campaign is from David Craig: LGBT Pride for all of the UK

I am so proud to be part of the UK and just as proud to be a member of the LGBT community.

I heard about the Tell Us Your Story campaign from Scotland In Union and I guess as a young gay Scottish man, I wanted to share my thoughts on why I am proud of the UK family and the LGBT family.

It really does fill me with hope when I hear from recent studies that the proportion of the British public who say they approve of same-sex partnerships has peaked over the past 30 years. This gives me a sense of belonging and acceptance but also makes me look back on our journey in the UK.

Everyone should know that the 1967 act was a milestone in equality, it was far from the end of the story. There have been many other key dates on the journey towards sexual and gender equality, not just for gay men like me but for the rest of the UK LGBT community. For example, gay sex remained illegal in Scotland and Northern Ireland until 1982.

Civil partnerships were legalised in 2004 throughout the United Kingdom, with the first ceremonies taking place at the end of the following year. Same-sex marriage was legalised a decade later, with the first ceremonies taking place in England, Wales and Scotland in 2014.

The above milestones are only a small part of the LGBT journey but what strikes me is that we have made progress together and I want to see that to continue. I have been to Manchester, London and of course Glasgow pride but never have I felt isolated or identified myself as different from the others around me.

LGBT Rights do not belong to any one political party, we have fought for the rights together and I believe these rights belong to us all.

LGBT Movement to me is simply a movement of others coming together.

The UK family is also a movement of others coming together.

I hope others agree and continue the fight for both equal rights for all in the UK but equally fight to keep our UK family together.
