Humza Yousaf claims that “most seats” would be mandate for separation

First Minister Humza Yousaf has claimed that the SNP winning “most” seats in the next general election would be a mandate to break-up the UK.

In an interview on STV’s Scotland Tonight, the SNP leader contradicted the motion passed by his own conference last year which referred to a “majority” of seats, in the latest confusion to engulf the nationalists’ election strategy.

It means, in theory, the SNP could suffer huge seat losses and still claim a mandate for separation.

Pamela Nash, chief executive of Scotland in Union, said:

“Nobody can keep track of the SNP’s election strategy u-turns, and the party leader himself is so confused that he doesn’t even understand what was passed at his own conference.

“This dizzying array of different positions would be funny if it wasn’t so serious.

“This is a reminder that Humza Yousaf is so completely out of touch with Scotland that he thinks the forthcoming election should be about dividing communities and rerunning a constitutional argument, rather than tackling the cost-of-living crisis.

“Scotland deserves politicians who focus on the people’s priorities.”
