As Scotland approaches the tenth anniversary of the 2014 independence referendum, a new Survation poll highlights a continued strong preference for remaining part of the UK and growing dissatisfaction with the SNP’s performance in government.
Key Findings from the Poll:
Support for the Union: The poll reveals that 59% of voters in Scotland would still choose to remain part of the UK if a referendum were held today. This is consistent with the outcome of the 2014 referendum, where Scotland voted decisively against separation.
Priorities for Government: Voters have clearly indicated that the NHS, cost of living, and the economy should be the Scottish Government’s top priorities. In contrast, only 7% believe that independence should be a major focus for the current administration.
Performance of the SNP: The poll reflects significant discontent with the SNP’s management of key issues. Only 31% of voters hold a favourable view of the First Minister, John Swinney, and similar dissatisfaction is evident across various sectors. Just 32% of respondents rate the government’s performance on the NHS positively, with even lower ratings for the economy (29%), housing (28%), and drug deaths (20%).
Future Outlook: With the next Holyrood election approaching, this new poll suggests that many voters are ready for a change in leadership to better address Scotland’s pressing issues.
Alastair Cameron, founder and chair of Scotland in Union, commented:
“Ten years after the referendum, Scotland’s commitment to remaining part of the UK remains strong. The poll underscores a desire for politicians to focus on critical areas like health, jobs, and housing rather than pursuing divisive constitutional debates. The SNP’s failure to deliver on these fronts highlights the need for a shift in government priorities.”
“The next Holyrood election is a crucial opportunity for Scots to move on from 17 years of nationalist failure and elect leaders who will address the real concerns of the people.”
